IHBS 2011

Posted on by Aaron Heine

Last week I attended the four day International Home Builders Show in Orlando Florida with my boss George Goodwyn of Goodwyn Home Builders. It was nice but the mood was still a little down because of the home market, however there were certainly lots of signs of recovery. There were hundreds of booths that seemed to go on for days. They had lots of very modern faucets, sinks and just about everything you could imagine.

My first party at my house was a great success! Lots of people came, built a fire, burnt a huge hole in the backyard, cops came, fun and games for all! I was an Indian and my brother just happened to be a cowboy. Here is the invitation I made.

The LogoLoft is Bankrupt

One year ago I began working as a web designer at the Logo Loft here in Montgomery AL. The company is kind of a mess and a bit disorganized but it has been great for me. I feel like I have been thrown head first into the world of web design and I have learned a lot.

At 5:00 today our boss called the entire staff of 25 into a meeting. He said he is filing for bankruptcy and this will be everyone’s last day.

I have never liked the idea of paying rent. I’m a long term thinker so I figured I would go for it. Now is a good time to buy a house and I figured I could get a fixer upper and it would be like a big design project for me and a good excuse to get away from the computer and get my hands dirty.

I was thinking the only way for me to afford a house that was what I wanted was to buy a foreclosed home that was kind of a fixer-upper. The one I decided on was certainly that. Basically every wall needs to be painted and all the carpet needs to be replaced.

Life with a name that begins with two A’s

In elementary school I used to think it was cool to have a name that begins with two A’s. Back then it was more common for a teacher to organize things based on your first name as opposed to your last. That meant that often I was first for a lot of things, games, checking roll, or sometimes we would be asked to get in alphabetical order line to go somewhere.

After grade school those perks wore off, but with the emergence of cell phones an interesting side effect began taking place. I was on the receiving end of everyone’s accidental cell phone calls. Because my name is first in everyone’s phone directory I get called if someone accidentally hits one or two buttons on their phone. It often tends to happen when people are in transition. When I answer the phone I may hear a car door open, footsteps, knock on a door, maybe a little snip of conversation. I will usually, “Hello, Hello!” listen for a minute, and hang up. (more…)
