A boss that’s easily distracted

Posted on by Aaron Heine

My boss is a man that thinks big. He’s very imaginative and energetic with childlike ideas that shows up in various ways. For example, the education/entertainment school he owns consist of eight buildings shaped like characters from Alice in Wonderland.

He comes to me last week excited as a kid on Christmas morning. He said in very broken English, that he knows of three floors in a building that he wants to turn into some kind of kid’s center. He said he imagines about 10 very small rooms hanging from the ceiling or standing on stilts. He wanted a variety of transitions such as slides that would take the kids in and out of the rooms. Inside the rooms he wanted a puzzle room, game room, magic room etc. He didn’t really know what he wanted in the rooms, but

there would be no teacher or assistant inside. (more…)

One month left in Korea

Posted on by Aaron Heine

Now the countdown begins, I have lots of planning to do. I’ve decided to fly into San Francisco and explore California for a bit when I return. Never been there before. My plan so far is pretty basic. I plan to rent a car in San Fran and drive down to San Diego where I have a friend, and back up again.

I’m won’t be in any hurry and hope so spend at least a couple days in some of the larger cities. I plan to try out www.couchsurfing.com for the first time. Maybe a can catch up with these guys at some point. Also plan on doing a little job hunting, but with the economy like it is it’s tough to stay optimistic. Anybody with must see stops in mind let me know.

Oh yea, first stop, 4×4 Animal Style In-N-Out Burger. Posted in Korea |

Theatre torture

Posted on by Aaron Heine

I went to see “Marley and Me” yesterday. If you don’t know it’s basically about a young family and their rambunctious dog.

This movie was doomed before I even walked into the theatre. Before I saw the movie I saw a poster for the it on a bus stop that showed only the cute dog and his puppy dog eyes. Someone had spray painted over it, “The dog dies.”

The first half of the movie was ok I guess, I got a few laughs thanks to the dog. But after about an hour of watching the dog tear shit up was starting to stress me out. The bad dog routine was getting really old.

Then Jennifer Aniston starts hating life and screaming her head off for the longest time. I think at that time she had her third baby that was also screaming all the time. I wanted to turn down the volume sooooo bad.

As it progressed I found myself thinking, “what’s the plot of this movie, what are these people trying to accomplish, they’re just a normal happy family living a normal happy life?”

One of the two main conflicts of the movie, Owen Wilson’s career uncertainty, was never resolved. However, the main conflict of the movie certainly was resolved, the dog died. Marley Spoiler Posted in Korea |

Friendly old man in McDonalds

Posted on by Aaron Heine

I was in line at McDonald’s on Wednesday when an older Korean man began speaking to me. He seemed very excited to see an American and he asked if he could join me at my table. His english wasn’t very good, but he had a lot to say. I told him I rode my bike here and he said he too was a rider. He invited me to come riding with him sometime. I said I probably would and I gave him my business card with my email address on it.

He sent me an email a few days later. Now in his email I’m sure he used some kind of bad translation software for writing it but I assure you, he does have an interesting, and I guess you could say, broad vocabulary. For example, when I went up to buy a second hamburger at Mcdonalds he said my appetite was ravenous and gluttonous. Makes you wonder about the methods people go about learning English here in Korea. Below is his email. (more…)

Humbled by the Snowboard

Posted on by Aaron Heine

In my Jan 13th entry I thought I was hot shit on skis. Snowboarding was another story. This was my first time snowboarding.

To make a long painful story less painful I’ll just tell you of two falls.

The first happened on my first run. I had no clue the ground was hard as cement so when I hit the ground I really busted my ass and screwed my wrist up pretty good.

I’ve seen fake snow before, and it looks like snow. What covered this mountain did not look like snow. It was tiny pieces of ice, kind of like salt, but a little bigger. It was very slick.

The next serious fall happend to be my last run. I was starting to get the hang of it and and made it to the bottom with some speed. Out of the blue – BAM! I hit the ground hard. My head hit the ground knocking my goggles and hat off. I mean it when I say the ground was hard as concrete.

I am now sitting on a large black and blue bruise and typing with a wrist that will need some kind of brace. Posted in Korea, Outdoor Rec |
