Euro Trek 2009

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

Just returned from a two week trek across central Europe! My brother Ben and I went to Budapest where my brother Connor is teaching English with his girlfriend Heli. The four of us and another girl named Eva set out to make it to the southern coast and back up to the top again.

This was my first time in Europe and it was quite amazing. We also stayed with Eva’s parents in Hungry and Heli’s parents in Slovakia. They were very graceful and excited to see us. They filled us up on some amazing traditional dishes and Eva’s parents gave us two massive jugs of homemade wine for the trip!

Budapest is a beautiful city, practically carved out of stone. Vienna has massive extravagant palaces that seem to match the very fashionable and trendy lifestyle. Bosnia has huge winding mountains, and in it, Sarajevo though quaint and friendly bears many scars form the Bosnian war of the early 90s. The concrete walls of our hostel was still riddled with bullet holes.

The Adriatic sea on the coast of Croatia has crystal clear water spotted with Islands. On the island of Korcula we found a beautiful condo on a mountainside that overlooked the ocean. It even had turtles in the balcony garden!

Distressed Gardener

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

This weekend I was visiting with my brothers Dusty and Ben in Jacksonville Alabama. That first night we decided we were going to make a campfire in his backyard. We were a little short on firewood so Ben and I drove through his neighborhood towards the woods in search of any firewood. Just as the sun was beginning to set we came to a lonely dead end that only had one house along side its turnaround. Looking into the yard I saw a lady that looked like she was working in the large garden that covered her front yard. We couldn’t see her that well as I was pulling my car around the dead end, but I decided to stop because it almost looked like she was laying down. We asked her if she was ok and she yelled, “No, Help me!” We quickly got out to help. Her legs had become entangled in some plastic that she was trying to cover her garden with. The elderly lady had fallen and hurt her shoulder, and had been laying there unable to get up for an hour. We helped her to her feet, brushed her off and helped her inside.

It is really amazing we happened to be driving down that dead end street, we might have been the only car all day that passed that house. If we didn’t drive by she shirly would have spent the night in her garden.

One month left in Korea

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Now the countdown begins, I have lots of planning to do. I’ve decided to fly into San Francisco and explore California for a bit when I return. Never been there before. My plan so far is pretty basic. I plan to rent a car in San Fran and drive down to San Diego where I have a friend, and back up again.

I’m won’t be in any hurry and hope so spend at least a couple days in some of the larger cities. I plan to try out www.couchsurfing.com for the first time. Maybe a can catch up with these guys at some point. Also plan on doing a little job hunting, but with the economy like it is it’s tough to stay optimistic. Anybody with must see stops in mind let me know.

Oh yea, first stop, 4×4 Animal Style In-N-Out Burger.

Old Photos

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

It’s funny how some small events seem to stick on your memory forever. You don’t really know why certain things are stubbornly lodged into your memory, but you know not even a brain toothpick could get rid of them.
One of those memories is of me and my friend Brandon riding down a hill on a large board on top of a skateboard. We sat on either side of the large board seesawing it like airplane wings and steering it to the bottom of the hill. What I remember best was the sound the skateboard made as it rolled down the hill. The sound of the wheels on concrete was much louder and deeper than a normal skateboard because the large wooden board seemed to amplify and contain the sound. It really did sound like an airplane taking off.

Anyway, my friend Brandon just sent me a photo I didn’t know existed! That’s my brother Connor in the center.
