I’m in a thermal melting pot of people

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

This place is a huge! I feel a bit overwhelmed and slightly disappointed that I will not be able to see the entire park, but damnit I have been trying.

Speaking of trying to see it all, the diversity of staff here is great and really a reminder of the size of the world. I have made great friends from Colombia, Tiawan, Russia, Finland and good ole’ Canada. I have spent lots of time with some people from Bogota. I have taken quite a liking to one girl in particular. She really wants me to visit after Yellowstone.

All of the different languages I hear here are fascinating. It really gives me an appreciation for my own language. Despite so many people being from so many different parts of the world everyone definitely has one thing in common. They love to drink! Being here is like being back in college. (except now I’m much more popular with the girls;)

Yesterday a bear killed an elk right near our cabins. They had block a large section of land behind the cabins. Also some crazy elk has been harassing staff as they walk to the diner. I think it was the dead elk’s mother.

So much to say, I’ll try and let the pictures tell it.

Yellowstone and Walter Anderson

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

As I travel to Yellowstone National Park to work for a few months one of my favorite artist comes to mind. I can relate to the amazing Mississippi artist Walter Anderson. He had a powerful desire for adventure and beauty and would seek it out with a vengeance traveling thousands of miles at a time on his bike or paddling to his favorite island to stay for months at a time. I gained a new respect for watercolors after seeing one of his exhibits in Jackson MS. I hope that with my camera I can capture the beauty of nature as passionately as he did when I am in Yellowstone. I think an artist really needs to live in nature to fully appreciate and portray it.
