Your cellphone will be your supercomputer

I’m going to play technological prophet for a moment. In light of Apple releasing it’s third version of its iPhone software, I began thinking about the capabilities of smart phones and the possibility they have to overpower your PC as your main machine simply because of the mobility of the phone.

This comparison shows you what I see as the nine most important abilities of the two most popular personal technological devices.

The above graph shows that the two devices are about equal. Many of the areas the PC is lacking such as GPS, photo and phone is simply because it wouldn’t be feasible for the larger machine.

This second graph shows how the two could compare in a few years if you could simply attach the phone to a monitor/keyboard at home.

Attaching your phone to a monitor/keyboard is not difficult or far off. Notice how the PC makes no significant improvements and still has the huge gaps. Also, with the quickly growing flash memory size and online data storage, the storage category will soon not be an issue for the phone. The computer has reached a point where the small advances in speed and and general ability are not significant anymore. For example, computers are beginning to ship with a couple terabytes storage, that’s way more than your average consumer will need. Now we just have to wait until the phone is brought up to speed for it to rule.

Apple has wasted no time charging us into this transition. They have opened up the iPhone so that anyone with a little programing knowledge can create an application that can be bought, downloaded, and installed with the touch of a button from anywhere. Giving the average Joe the power to combine GPS, Internet, Phone, Camera, etc… is huge. Here’s evidence it is working, fast.

“There are currently over 50,000 registered app developers for Apple. The App Store currently has over 25,000 apps available, resulting in over 800 million downloads to date.”

  1. How did you come up with your graphs? What units are the brown boxes in? How much better is a full brown box than half a brown box?
